Admin and user roles

Your JetBrains Account can have various roles. The roles determine what your JetBrains Account page looks like and what you can do on it.

User roles

User roles grant access only to licenses you own privately or that have been assigned to you by your organization.

Personal license owner

When you purchase personal licenses from JetBrains, a personal JetBrains Account is created for you.

Your JetBrains Account shows all licenses purchased with the email address used to create the account. To access licenses purchased with a different email address, link it to your account.

User of assigned licenses

You get this role when an org or team admin assigns you a license and you accept it by logging in or creating a JetBrains Account.

Admin roles

Admin roles give you access to an organization profile. You can be assigned an org or team admin role. Note that some contact roles also provide organization profile access. 

Organization admin

Org admins manage orders and licenses for their organization. Each organization can have multiple admins with the following permissions:

  • Purchase and upgrade licenses for the entire organization
  • Track orders
  • Create new teams and merge existing ones
  • Distribute licenses to end users
  • Invite org and team admins

Obtaining org admin permissions

There are several ways to get org admin permissions:

Get invited by an existing admin

Any org admin can invite new admins to their organization.

Get admin permissions automatically

When you first purchase commercial JetBrains licenses, your organization profile is created automatically. You'll get admin permissions if:

  • You are the only license purchaser.
  • You used the same email address for all purchases for your organization.

To claim org admin permissions, create a JetBrains Account with the email address you used to purchase licenses.

When purchasing licenses for an organization that already has licenses purchased with a different email address, you'll receive team admin permissions.

Contact support

If your organization profile has no admin or you don't have access to the admin account, contact support.

Team admin

Team admins manage orders and licenses for their teams. Each team can have multiple admins with the following permissions:

  • Purchase and upgrade licenses for the team
  • Distribute licenses to end users
  • Invite other administrators to the team

Obtaining team admin permissions

There are several ways to get team admin permissions:

Get invited by an admin

Org admins can invite team admins to any team in their organization. Team admins can add other admins to their teams. Learn more in Add or remove team administrators.

Get admin permissions automatically

Purchasing new licenses does not grant org admin permissions for an existing organization profile if another person previously purchased licenses for that organization.

Instead, you will receive team admin permissions for a new team that will be created within your existing organization profile. This team will contain your purchased licenses. You won't have access to other teams or licenses in the organization.

To claim team admin permissions, create a JetBrains Account with the email address you used to purchase licenses.
