Administrator and user roles in JetBrains Account

A JetBrains Account can have various roles. The roles determine what your JetBrains Account page looks like and what you can do in it.

Personal license owner

A personal JetBrains Account is created when you purchase personal licenses from JetBrains.

In your JetBrains Account, you can automatically see all the licenses purchased with the email address that you used to create this account. If you used a different email address to purchase licenses in the past, link this address to your new account to access those licenses. 

Organization administrator

An organization administrator has the following permissions:

  • Purchase and upgrade licenses for the entire organization
  • Track orders
  • Create new teams and merge existing ones
  • Distribute licenses to end users
  • Invite other administrators for the organization or any team within the organization. 

How the organization administrator role is assigned

An organization can have any number of administrators. The administrator role can be assigned to your JetBrains Account in one of the following ways:

  1. Another administrator invites you to manage the organization.

  2. You automatically receive administrator permissions when purchasing licenses for your organization.

    This happens if you are the only person who purchased licenses for your organization, and you used the same email address for every purchase. In this case, we automatically create an organization profile with a single team and assign the organization administrator permissions to your account.

    However, in some cases, the automatically created organization profile may not have an organization administrator. If you find yourself in this situation, contact our Sales team for assistance.

Team administrator

A team administrator has the following permissions:

  • Purchase and upgrade licenses for the team
  • Distribute licenses to end users
  • Invite other administrators to the team

How the team administrator role is assigned

A team can have any number of administrators. The team administrator role can be assigned to your JetBrains Account in one of the following ways:

  1. Another administrator invites you to manage the team.

  2. You automatically receive team administrator permissions when purchasing licenses for your organization.

    This happens if you make a purchase for an organization that has purchased licenses with a different email address in the past. In this case, we automatically create an organization profile with multiple teams and make you an administrator of the team that corresponds to your purchase.
    You have access to your team, but not to other teams or the organization profile.

User of assigned licenses

This role is assigned to your JetBrains Account when an administrator invites you to use a license, and you accept the invitation by creating a new JetBrains Account or logging in to your existing one.
