General Licensing

How do I know if I qualify for a commercial or non-commercial subscription?

If you are using Aqua or RustRover to obtain direct or indirect commercial advantage or monetary compensation, you need a commercial subscription. For other use cases, you may be eligible for a non-commercial subscription depending on the specific scenario. Below is a list of use cases and how they would qualify. If your situation is not addressed in this FAQ, please contact sales@jetbrains.com.

Commercial Usage

• You are using Aqua or RustRover in order to create a product for which you obtain monetary compensation, regardless of your employment status (i.e. you can be employed by a company, self-employed, etc.)
• You are using Aqua or RustRover in order to provide consulting or other services for which you obtain monetary compensation.
• You are using Aqua or RustRover to create training and/or educational materials for which you obtain monetary compensation.
• You are working on an open-source project as part of your day job for which you are paid a salary.

Non-Commercial Usage

Any scenario that doesn’t fall into Commercial Usage, including:

• You are working on a product or service that you are providing for free and not receiving any monetary compensation for.
• You are working on an open-source project in an altruistic manner and are not getting paid a salary.
• You are working on an open-source project in an altruistic manner and are receiving occasional sponsorships and/or donations.
• You are participating in an educational course or using Aqua or RustRover for learning purposes.
• You are creating free content and/or educational materials and providing them for free on YouTube or other free mediums.

Is there an individual commercial subscription?

For Aqua and RustRover, there is no longer an individual subscription similar to those of other JetBrains IDEs. If you want to use Aqua or RustRover for commercial purposes as an individual, you can purchase an individual All Products Pack subscription, which includes both Aqua and RustRover and allows commercial use.

How do you verify that non-commercial subscriptions are being used correctly?

Currently, use of non-commercial subscriptions is based on the honor system, in that we trust that you are not abusing the subscription terms. We may implement a stricter approach at a later date depending on how things go.

I work as a freelancer/consultant. Should I buy a commercial subscription?

Yes, you should purchase a commercial subscription.

Do Aqua and RustRover have different pricing for individuals and organizations, like other JetBrains IDEs?

Unlike other JetBrains IDEs, Aqua and RustRover each have a single pricing model for commercial use.

What subscription terms are available for commercial subscriptions?

A commercial subscription can be purchased on an annual or monthly basis.

I already have an All Products Pack subscription. Are Aqua and RustRover included in it?

Yes, Aqua and RustRover are included in, and fall under the same licensing model as, the All Products Pack. This means that if you purchased an organization or individual subscription for the All Products Pack, you can use Aqua and RustRover for commercial purposes.

How long is a non-commercial subscription valid for?

Non-commercial subscriptions are issued on an annual basis and must be renewed to remain valid.

Do I need to renew my non-commercial subscription?

Renewals are necessary for both commercial and non-commercial subscriptions, and the renewal date depends on when a subscription expires.

As an educational or non-profit organization, can we apply for a 50% discount, as with other JetBrains IDEs?

Yes, you can apply for a 50% discount on commercial subscriptions.

As a start-up, can we apply for a 50% discount, as with other JetBrains IDEs?

Yes, you can apply for a 50% discount on commercial subscriptions.

Can I apply for a non-commercial subscription if I’m working on something that currently does not provide me revenue but at a later date might?

If you’re an individual working on a project that currently does not generate direct or indirect revenue, you may apply for a non-commercial subscription as long as your project does not fall into any of the other categories that require a commercial subscription (including but not limited to open-source projects with financial backing, start-up programs with financial support, etc.).

Can I opt out of sending anonymous usage statistics if using a non-commercial subscription?

If you’re using a non-commercial subscription, you cannot opt out of sending anonymous usage statistics.

Complimentary Licenses

If I am working on an open-source project which has no direct or indirect monetization, can I apply for a non-commercial subscription?

If you are working on open source in an altruistic manner, for non-commercial purposes, and not monetizing the project directly or indirectly, you can apply for a non-commercial Aqua or RustRover subscription. Please note that we also have an Open-Source Program for all our tools, which you can learn about at Support for Open-Source Projects.

If I am a student or teacher at an officially recognized institution, can I apply for a non-commercial subscription?

For students and teachers, we already have a licensing program in place. Please check the conditions at JetBrains Educational Licenses.

If I want to use Aqua or RustRover for learning and do not belong to an officially recognized institution, can I apply for a non-commercial subscription?

Yes, you may apply for a non-commercial subscription for educational purposes.

If I want to use Aqua or RustRover for teaching and do not belong to an officially recognized institution, can I apply for a non-commercial subscription?

If you are not generating revenue from your activities (for example, you are providing free courses or free material online), you may apply for a non-commercial subscription.

As a user group lead or conference organizer, can I provide a complimentary commercial subscription for Aqua or RustRover as a giveaway?

Complimentary commercial subscriptions for Aqua and RustRover are not available for handing out.
